Cape and Islands United Way Distributes Hundreds of Winter Coats to Children

Collaboration with Puritan Cape Cod results in over 200 new Patagonia coats donated

Hyannis, MA — The Cape and Islands United Way (CIUW), a nonprofit organization on a mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our communities to advance the common good on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, has distributed 236 new Patagonia winter coats to families in need in its annual collaboration with Puritan Cape Cod. In addition to the 100 coats donated by Puritan Cape Cod, CIUW’s “Cozy Jackets, Cozy Kids” campaign raised funds in hopes of doubling the number of coats donated to local partner organizations. The campaign proved to be a success as CIUW surpassed its initial goal.

“For over three generations, our commitment to serving the community has been deeply rooted in our values,” said Rick Penn, owner of Puritan Cape Cod. “We are incredibly proud to partner with the Cape and Islands United Way to support kids on Cape Cod with warm winter jackets again this year.”

Local nonprofit organizations, including Housing Assistance Corporation, the Lower Cape Outreach Council, Cape Cod Council of Churches, Cape Cod Foster Closet, and the Harwich Children’s Fund, have distributed the brand-new Patagonia coats to needy families on the Cape & Islands, ensuring the coats will be available for the holiday season. The recipients of the coats range in age from toddler to teenager.

“The need is tremendous,” said Patty Mitrokostas, Senior Director of Strategic Funding Initiatives & Foundation Relations at Housing Assistance Corporation, in a promotional video for the campaign. “Probably double what it was last year. A basic need like a winter coat is something that can really make a difference to children.”
