The second talk in our Wellness series, Dr. Wendy Ellis, ND will speak on “Lifestyle Factors and Memory Loss."
Dr. Wendy Ellis is a functional medicine physician with over 20 years of experience in the healthcare field. She has extensive experience in the menopause field – and enjoys working with both men and women as they navigate the aging process, including cognitive impairment. Data from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey found that 4.0% of adults age 65 and older (living at home) reported having received a dementia diagnosis, though some studies suggest it’s up to 10% of our population. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for an estimated 60% to 80% of cases.
In 2020, the Lancet Commission reported on 12 significant factors across the lifespan that influence your risk of dementia. Research suggests that 40% of our risk comes from factors that we can control.
This lecture is intended to help you understand the different types of dementia, factors that contribute to cognitive impairment, methods of testing and evaluation – and provide an evidence based approach to prevention and / or treatment.
The Wellness series at the Library continues on Saturday, April 5th 1:30pm-3pm with a panel discussion about Fall Risk. And, Thursday, June 5th at 6:30pm, Dr. Kumara Sidhartha speaks on a topic related to June’s National Cancer Survivors Month.

Step into the world of Waiting for Godot, where humor, absurdity, and profound human truths collide. Under the visionary direction of Ricky Bourgeois, this iconic masterpiece by Samuel Beckett comes alive in the intimate Sigel Black Box Theater, offering a theater experience unlike any other.
Vladimir and Estragon wait. For what—or whom—they're not entirely sure. As time stretches and compresses, their banter and interactions weave a rich tapestry of wit, existential inquiry, and unexpected laughter. In this hauntingly hilarious exploration of hope, despair, and the human condition, Beckett invites us to find meaning—or not—in the wait.
Perfect for theater enthusiasts and those curious about the timeless power of minimalist storytelling, this production promises an unforgettable evening that will leave you thinking long after the final bow.
Seating is limited in the Sigel Black Box Theater, so don’t wait to secure your tickets.

Woods Hole Film Festival presents CABIN MUSIC by James Carson, Special Event Documentary Film Screening and Solo Piano Concert
Mesmerizing pianist and filmmaker James Carson brings his internationally acclaimed CABIN MUSIC experience to Cotuit Center for the Arts.
Hailed as “supremely immersive” by the American Society of Cinematographers and as a “lyrical, genre-defying feast for the senses” (DOC NYC), CABIN MUSIC is both a standalone award-winning feature documentary film and a new form of hypnotically immersive concert experience.
Carson’s film is acclaimed for bringing people across three continents and into a unique straw bale cabin he built in Northern Alberta totransform the ways we create and experience music. Yet the aim of his combined film and concert events is still deeper: to invite each audience member not just into Carson’s cabin, but into their own ‘inner cabin’—that place inside that no one knows about, where change is possible. This cumulative effect of experiencing “a cinematic wonder” (The Independent Critic) before immersing in Carson’s “trance-inducing, shimmering arpeggiated figures” (Feast of Music)transports audiences into “inner and outer states of being approaching bliss” (POV Magazine).

Still Life Stories features paintings from the Cahoon Museum’s permanent collection -lush florals and fruits by Edward Chalmers Leavitt, Marie LeValley, Levi Wells Prentice and others- surrounded by striking examples of the genre by contemporary local and regional artists.
Still life paintings emphasize the artist’s skill in realistically rendering details, texture, and imbuing life-like qualities into a two-dimensional form. Still Life Stories includes many types of this genre such as floral bouquets, bountiful food and banquet images, animals, and symbolism.
Featured artists include Deborah Carter, Martha Cahoon, Ralph Cahoon, Nicole Duennebier, Valerie Hegarty, Marie LeValley, Edward Chalmers Leavitt, Brad Nelson, James Peale, Levi Wells Prentice, Larry Preston, Scott Prior, Shelley Reed, Severin Roesen, Curtis Speer, Eric Wert, and Abbie Lowella Zuill.

Enneking is often credited as “America’s first Impressionist”. His continued studies with the great impressionists of Europe influenced the development of his personal style, nurtured his love of nature, and reinforced his drive as a professional artist. He brought these teachings back with him to the United States where he painted in Boston and throughout greater region. Discover New England in a new light through Enneking’s bubbling trout brooks, thickly forested landscapes, solitary clam diggers, and his favorite subject: the brilliant New England twilight.
Celebrated during his time as “one of the world’s greatest landscape painters,” the Cahoon Museum is proud to present our collection of six John Enneking paintings alongside significant loans illustrating his many studies in Europe, his passion for nature conservation, and his advocacy for a truly American art style. The exhibition also reunites the artist with those whom he worked alongside and inspired while living and working in Boston, including the young Martha Cahoon.

Many artists take inspiration from nature and Martha Cahoon was no exception. The Cahoon Museum invites you to take an intimate look into the inspirations behind Martha’s widely appealing painted furniture and easel paintings.
Martha Cahoon loved nature. Over the course of her long career, she came to be admired by many for her sensitive pastoral landscapes and masterful painted furniture designs. But the roots of Martha’s artistic interest in nature run even deeper. She cultivated inspiration from gardening, spending time in nature, and studying the floral motifs of Swedish folk design. Martha Cahoon: A Garden of Inspiration highlights Martha’s repeated use of floral motifs through her expertly painted furniture and the easel paintings she became known for. The exhibition both celebrates and chronicles how Martha’s artistic voice blossomed over time.

Sailors Valentines: Maritime Art from the Heart celebrates the friendship and artistic collaboration of painter Ralph Cahoon and sailors valentine artist Bernard “Bernie” Woodman. Sailors valentines originated during the 19th century and feature exquisite shellwork housed in octagonal wooden boxes. Once popular gifts from sailors to their sweethearts back home, Ralph and Bernie further developed upon this artistic tradition with the inclusion of what they called “spyglass scenes”—paintings Ralph created as the centerpiece of Bernie’s intricate shell arrangements. Together between 1977 and 1982, Ralph and Bernie created dozens of whimsical, nautical fantasies in the sailors valentines tradition complete with mermaids, sailors, and hot air balloons. After Ralph passed away in 1982, Bernie commissioned Ralph’s wife and business partner, painter Martha Cahoon to carry on the tradition of painting spyglass scenes for his valentines. Ralph and Bernie’s sailors valentines tell a special story of friendship, artistic collaboration, and maritime history.

Goethe’s fantastical poem, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice takes us into the magical world of a sorcerer and his headstrong daughter. Captured at the Southwark Playhouse in 2021, this play explores the importance of love and family, as father and daughter learn to work together. Described by The Stage Magazine as a “charming contemporary fairytale,” this musical is full of humor, magic and charming songs. Artist Stephanie King’s work of mixed media and botanical illustrations containing real seaweed and botanical pressings. The works in this series offer both a realistic and whimsical assemblage of time and place. Stephanie takes a Victorian tradition of seaweed pressing into the future with modern shapes and ideas while pushing traditional boundaries and approaches. Stephanie focuses on creating natural abstractions through material exploration, drawing inspiration from the colors, patterns and textures found within the seascape. Each design strikes a balance between experimentation and refinement. Pressing seaweeds and botanicals offers Stephanie unlimited inspiration, peace, joy and hope. Working with a ‘wet medium’ has helped her surrender to the flow and learn to embrace the constant changing tides of life in all of its rhythmic cycles. Each piece of art is transformed into a piece of natural history; a unique fingerprint created from the specific seaside environment where its raw materials were collected. Stephanie is endlessly fascinated by the beauty and complexity of seaweed and botanicals in their natural environments. Along with being used as an art medium, seaweeds are important ecological resources, producing oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide in marine environments and play a major role in the maintenance of the earth’s ecosystem. In the early Victorian era, seaweed collecting was a popular past time among those women who had the means to travel to the English coast. Women gathered these ‘flowers of the sea’ and dried and pressed them in albums as memories of their seaside visits. Local botanicals were also admired and included into scrapbooks along with poetry, watercolors and anything that reminded them of their joyful experience. All of the seaweed in this exhibit was personally foraged and ethically sourced by the artist from locations along the Atlantic coast of Massachusetts, Maine and England, UK.

In The Modern Cape, artists Josh Wald, Jiyoung Park, and Jeremy Wagner write a ‘love letter’ to Cape Cod. The exhibition marries the old and new, a virtual dance with history, a history being written in present time. The three artists will showcase their use of proprietary painting techniques as they demonstrate possible pathways to the evolution of the Cape Cod painting style. Their work is both a salute to the traditional style that historically comes from this area, as well as an embrace of the future. The modern take on this traditional style will be of interest to traditionalists as well as modern enthusiasts of younger generations.

The use of white is intentional in Never In Lieu of Flowers. Like a single note held in a minor key, it deepens the connection to the meaning of the work. While color, lights, and the use of resin, in the Deconstructed Botanicals, extend the language. Much of the joy of flowers is witnessing their life span. A tulip, for example, brings us hope as it pushes from the earth, continues to grow and extend its beauty after it is cut and even the faded fall of petals reminds of the passage of time. Ginnie Peterson constructs the Never in Lieu of Flowers and Deconstructed Botanicals sculptures from plaster, natural materials, stoneware, resin, steel and lights. For the white series, Peterson formulates mixes with Hydrocal (white gypsum cement) or plaster and liquid polymers to coat objects. She also makes many of her own containers from stoneware. In the later work Ginnie builds on steel armatures that she has welded for this series. She makes silicone molds from actual flowers and leaves then casts them with pigmented resin. She amasses materials then works intuitively, selecting from an inventory of materials, paying attention to shapes and relationships, conscious of how the cast of light affects the pieces or how the added light moves. Both Never in Lieu of Flowers and Deconstructed Botanicals are concerned with mortality, time, and potential, both lived and lost. The sculptures embrace the magnitude of the moment and reflect an awareness of our limited time on earth. The flowers, captured at their peak, grieve their own demise. They show us how much energy it takes to reach our potential, and how quickly we fade. As still lives, they evoke ghosts, statues. You cannot talk about life, they say, without talking about death. Where are you on the continuum? How do you measure?

NOMINATED FOR AN ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE! Amidst the chaos and destruction of the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine, three artists defiantly find inspiration and beauty as they defend their culture and their country. In a war waged by professional soldiers against ordinary civilians, Slava, Anya, and Andrey choose to stay behind, armed with their art, their cameras, and, for the first time in their lives, their guns. Despite daily shelling, Anya finds resistance and purpose in her art, Andrey takes the dangerous journey to get his young family to safety abroad, and Slava becomes a weapons instructor for ordinary people who have become unlikely soldiers. As the war intensifies, Andrey picks up his camera to film their story, and on tiny porcelain figurines, Anya and Slava capture their idyllic past, uncertain present and hope for the future.

The Woods Hole Public Library will host a St. Patrick’s Day screening of a new film adapted from the Booker Prize nominated novel by Claire Keegan, Small Things Like These, on Monday, March 17, at 6:00 PM. The story takes place over Christmas in 1985, when devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths of his own. The film reveals truths about Ireland's Magdalene laundries -- horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s until 1996, ostensibly to reform "fallen young women." Like the book, the film adaptation is a quiet force that stays with viewers long after the credits roll. Brianna Zigler from the AV Club says, “The film functions as a reminder that everyone within them has the power to do good—even if it feels inconsequential, and especially if it feels like a risk.”

Exploring the Nature of Reality Continues
Rudolf Oldenbourg will discuss how we learn about the world around us through our senses, of which wehave five on first count: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. From the time we are born, evenbefore, our brain receives and integrates these different inputs and forms our experience of the worldaround us by literally recreating it. Because the brain recreates the outer world, the creation is necessarily subjective, as it is derived from the physical sensory inputs and their interpretation basedon our past experiences. In my contribution to this series on reality as we experience it, I plan to examine the physical nature of the signals and the first steps of detecting them to form the input for our senses. Many of the contributions by others in this series are covering the further processing of these basic sensory inputs so we can survive, procreate, and together thrive in this world.flavors of a thing to reach absolute agreement on what it is, causing disagreement about certitude.

ABOUT THE FILM:
THE BODY POLITIC is a harbinger of hope. Brandon Scott is a young Mayor who grew up during Baltimore’s most troubling years and sets out, with unyielding idealism, to change the course of his battered and beloved city. He is elected Mayor amid nationwide unrest following the murder of George Floyd. With unfettered access, cameras follow Scott throughout his first year in office as he introduces an ambitious plan for violence reduction and police reform that he promises will lower the city’s murder rate. Pundits claim Scott’s political health andthe city’s health are tied to the number 348 – the total murders Baltimore had the previous year, more homicides than New York City, a city 15 times its size. After entering office and barely getting a chance to enact his first safety reforms, violence surges to new highs. As the media and political foes attack his holistic approach, his commitment to his plan and principles put his political future in jeopardy. Will
his approach lead to healing and serve as a blueprint for the rest of the nation?

“Clever, charming, amusing, and just plain brilliant. Ken Krimstein is the most inventive graphic biographer on the planet-and certainly the only one who could explain both Einstein and Kafka. A page turner on gravity and relativity!” -KAI BIRD, Pulitzer Prize-winning co-author of American Prometheus
From the award-winning New Yorker cartoonist, a graphic narrative revealing the pivotal year in Prague when Einstein became “Einstein,” Franz Kafka became “Kafka,” and the world changed forever.
During the year that Prague was home to both Albert Einstein and Franz Kafka from 1911-1912, the trajectory of the two men's lives wove together in uncanny ways-as did their shared desire to tackle the world's biggest questions in Europe's strangest city. In stunning words and pictures, Einstein in Kafkaland reveals the untold story of how their worlds wove together in a cosmic battle for new kinds of truth.
Ken Krimstein has published cartoons in The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of The Three Escapes of Hannah Arendt (which won the Bernard J. Brommel Award and was a finalist for the Jewish Book Award) and When I Grow Up (named a Best Book of the Year by NPR).

The Woods Hole Public Library will host a travel talk on the Galápagos Islands on Saturday, March 29, at 3:00 pm. Laurie Raymond, Library Board member, intrepid sailor, and avid bicyclist (just to name a few of her many talents) traveled to the Galápagos Islands in November of 2024. She traveled with a group from Road Scholar, and had many opportunities to snorkel and explore ashore. Laurie says she was “attracted primarily by the vast and often unique/endemic flora and fauna but also by the crucial role the animals of the islands played in the development of Darwin's evolutionary theory. And heck, who wouldn't want to go there?!” For her talk at the Library, Laurie will share photos of the breathtaking scenery and natural wonders on land, on the water, and under the sea that she encountered on this trip of a lifetime.
