Cape Cod 5 Foundation Commits $15,000 to Help Heroes In Transition Kick Off 15th Anniversary

January 24, 2024 (Cape Cod, MA) – As Heroes In Transition (HIT) embarks on its 15th year, Cape Cod 5 Foundation has stepped up with a $15,000 commitment to support the nonprofit’s efforts to provide critical assistance to local service members, veterans, and military families.

“We are tremendously grateful to Cape Cod 5 Foundation and the bank’s leadership for understanding the importance of supporting individuals and families who serve and have served our country,” said HIT Executive Director Nicole Spencer. “Thanks to Cape Cod 5, we’ve been able to grow to the point we now offer 14 unique programs which provide connection, strengthen relationships, build community, and serve as a pathway to healing for nearly 1,500 individuals on an annual basis.”

Cape Cod 5 Foundation has provided philanthropic support to HIT since 2012, totaling approximately $65,000 in financial resources that have gone directly to strengthening HIT’s mission. They were one of HIT’s first Community Partners, joining the program which provides consistent year-round funding that enables the nonprofit to deliver its services. This latest gift marks the fourth straight year that Cape Cod 5 Foundation has served as a Community Partner.

Business owners interested in becoming a HIT Community Partner, should contact Nicole Spencer at nicole@heroesintransition.org.

Shortly after Cape Cod 5 CEO Matt Burke was hired at the bank as its associate director of finance in October 2012, he attended HIT’s 2nd Annual Fall Gala. “I was so impressed and every year the event has gotten better and better, just hearing the stories and the difference the organization is making in our community and in people’s lives,” said Burke, an Army National Guard veteran.

With HIT entering a milestone anniversary, Burke said, the decision for Cape Cod 5 Foundation to increase its giving this year was an easy one. “There’s a lot of veterans who have gone through these traumatic experiences and have difficulty dealing with what they went through and acclimating back to normal life,” said Burke. “That’s what is so special about HIT. They are able to bring veterans together and help them deal with that trauma in powerfully productive ways.”

He commended HIT’s leadership, which includes both Spencer and President Cyndy Jones, who founded the nonprofit with her late husband Kenneth following the death of their only son, U.S. Marine Captain Eric A. Jones, who was killed in Afghanistan in October 2009 while flying a combat mission. “What really drives Cyndy and Nicole is the difference you can make in people’s lives,” Burke said.

Cape Cod 5 Foundation’s support of HIT is emblematic of its commitment to philanthropy; last year, its total community giving was over $1.8 million.

Along with financially supporting nonprofits like HIT, Cape Cod 5 assists veterans-related causes through employee volunteerism at Veterans Day events, employees serving on boards and committees of local nonprofits, and participating in annual fundraisers for charities. It was featured by the American Bankers Association as a bank on the forefront of hiring veterans and helping service personnel transition to civilian jobs. And last year, it was recognized as a Champion for Military Hiring by RecruitMilitary.
