Waiting Little Campaign Features 10-Year-Old Boy, Denahi, from Falmouth Falmouth, MA: With summer in the rearview mirror, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands (BBBSCCI) is looking to engage the local population in volunteerism through becoming a mentor to a local child who could benefit from an additional, positive adult in their corner. As such, the agency is featuring one child who has unfortunately waited longer than they should have to for a Big. As part of BBBSCCI’s Waiting Little of the Month campaign, Denahi, age 10, from East Falmouth is being featured. Denahi has been on the agency’s waitlist for 161 days (and counting) and lives with his mother. Dehani's mother enrolled him in the program in hopes of finding a Big Brother who could be a positive male role model in his life and to help him realize his full potential. In Denahi’s own words, “I’d like a Big Brother who could throw a football around with me or go on nature walks and explore places!“ "Our need for male volunteers, especially on the Upper Cape, is real and very present,” noted JR Mell, Regional Director with BBBSCCI. “The Waiting Little of the Month campaign has helped people conceptualize the need for mentoring in our community and often is the extra push to sign up. Some of our best mentors are ones who tend to be on the fence about being a Big but take the leap and sign up.” In addition to Denahi, there are currently 71 kids, 39 on the Upper Cape, currently waiting for a mentor across the agency’s service territory, which encompasses Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Wareham & Plymouth. Mell also notes that the agency has seen an increase in referrals of youth seeking a mentor during the summer months.
