Book Reading at SEA: Capt. Elliot Rappaport

Sea Education Association (SEA) is pleased to announce a presentation with Captain Elliot Rappaport on Monday, August 21, at 6:30 pm. The event will be held in the Madden Center at the SEA campus, at 171 Woods Hole Road in Falmouth. Elliot will read from his book Reading the Glass: A Captain's View of Weather, Water, and Life on Ships (Dutton, February 2023)

What’s in a cloud? What distinguishes one type of storm from another? What exactly is El Niño? Rappaport answers these questions and more while also exploring historical moments of discovery and sharing captivating personal tales. He takes readers to places most would never dream of venturing, from the ice-filled seas near Greenland to the Roaring Forties of the South Pacific, where all four seasons can be experienced in an hour. On other voyages, he transits the turbulent and crowded waters of the Strait of Gibraltar and encounters violent tropical squalls while crossing through the deceptively named equatorial doldrums.

About the Author: Elliot Rappaport has sailed as a captain in the US maritime industry since 1992, involved primarily in the training of other mariners aboard a variety of traditional sailing ships. Presently a faculty member at Maine Maritime Academy, preparing cadets for professional careers at sea, he has also worked extensively at SEA. A graduate of Oberlin College and the University of Maine, Elliot lives in coastal Maine when not at sea. Reading the Glass is his first book.

Eight Cousins Bookstore will offer the books for purchase. No reservation necessary, but space is limited, so plan to arrive early. For more information, contact: development@sea.edu

SEA is a global teaching, learning and research community dedicated to the exploration, understanding and stewardship of marine and maritime environments. SEA empowers students with life-changing sea voyages of scientific and cultural discovery, academic rigor and personal growth. Our SEA programs feature an interdisciplinary curriculum and dynamic leadership-development experience – at sea aboard tall ships and on shore.
