On April 20, CARE for the Cape & Islands led a group of representatives from KAYAK, the world’s leading travel search engine, in a beach cleanup at two Falmouth beaches. 46 members of KAYAK’s staff from all over the country spent the afternoon picking up trash to prevent it from blowing or washing its way into the ocean. This volunteer activity is part of the company’s commercial team offsite meeting held at AutoCamp Cape Cod in Falmouth. KAYAK attendees spent several hours collecting marine debris from Woodneck and Chappaquoit beaches. Prior to the activity, CARE for the Cape & Islands provided the participants with an overview of what to look for and discussed the importance of keeping our environment litter free. CARE was assisted by Hyannis photographer Sarah Thornington and two AmeriCorps Cape Cod members. This is one way KAYAK continues to give back to the community along with the company’s annual Do Good Week where employees come together to volunteer in their local communities. During the three hour cleanup event KAYAK’s staff collected more than 1,000 pieces of trash. Plastic pollution threatens marine life, human health, the coastal environment, our tourism economy and contributes to climate change. Plastic is the primary debris of items found on regional beach cleanups conducted by CARE partners, indicating this debris winds up in Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket & Vineyard Sounds, and the North Atlantic Ocean, where it can be ingested by animals, break down into microplastics, and further degrade this important coastal region and its resources.
