Falmouth – Artwork by Diana Lee and her students will be on display at The Gallery at FCTV from July 1 through July 28, 2022. The opening reception will take place outdoors at FCTV on Sunday, July 10, from 3-5 pm (Rain date: Sun., July 17). Diana Lee’s early influences in painting began during her days as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Her teachers, Bill Flynn and Jack Clift, emphasized not only skill but also a way of looking and seeing a world which was personal and meaningful and finding a way to express that visually. Diana’s drawing skills gave her the freedom and confidence to paint with oils and pastels using the portrait, landscape and still life as her subject matter. She graduated in 1978 with a four-year Diploma of Studio Art. Diana spent her summers in North Falmouth as a child, and moved to the Cape in the late 1980s. After raising her children, she returned to school in 2000 and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the Spring of 2003. Diana enjoys using bright, bold colors in her paintings and responds to her subject matter by what she sees and feels. As well as working in her studio, Diana also likes being outdoors in the good weather painting Plein Air. Her mediums are oils, acrylics and pastels. Of her work she says, “Ever since I was a child, I have found refuge in my art. Here I can create beauty in my life and a safe environment all my own. My colors nourish like bread and water and shape my journey to a world of freedom from some of life’s harder reflections. Art allows an individual, me, to create, to breathe, and to nourish the soul. It provides an avenue to explore pain and sorrow mixed with the colors of life and joy. Painting allows me to reimagine the kaleidoscope of life, tumbling dark and light, and to determine the colors and images that express where I am or where I want to be. It allows me to share my bread and water with people who want to explore life through color and shape. Creating art is a telling of my experiences in the physical world.” Diana has received numerous awards and recognition including being selected as an emerging artist by Cape Cod Life Magazine in 1996 and the magazine’s Arts Edition in June 2012. She also was included in an article in the Cape Women magazine in 1999. She has taught classes and workshops at both the Falmouth Artist Guild and the Cape Cod Art Association. Joining Diana for this showing are her students Ellen Clark, Martha Gavenas, Marian Lans, Melinda McAra, Dunya McPherson, Marlene PinskyPanish, Beth Rockwell, Anne Seavey, and Anne Tcherepnin.
