June 21, 2022 (Hyannis, MA) – Visitors and residents of the Cape have much to look forward to as we usher in the summer of 2022. At this morning’s 14th Annual Quahog Day, the Cape’s beloved hard-shelled mollusk, “Doug the Quahog”, brought bright news with a forecast of 85 days of sunshine on tap. Today’s ceremony was held at Aselton Park, overlooking beautiful Hyannis Harbor. As usual, Doug was joined by his sidekick “Johnny Quahog” to whom he secretly whispered his forecast. Stephanie Viva, who is long-time Cape Cod radio personality, was on hand to emcee the festivities. And as always, Doug was flanked by his stealth security crew. Doug’s prediction of 85 days of sunshine will bring us right through Labor Day and into the glorious months of September and October. “Second Summer, which starts right after Labor Day, is the Cape’s best kept secret,” said Johnny Quahog, reportedly the only human being able to translate the secret quahog bi-valve language. “The water is warm, restaurants and shops are still open, everything is still going on, and there’s plenty of room to do it all! It might actually be the best time the year on the Cape.” Quahog Day was conceived by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce in 2009 and has come to symbolize a rite of passage into the summer season for Cape Codders. The forecast also comes ahead of a summer that is expected to be another record-breaking year with rentals nearly 100% booked. “With rentals and occupancy rates looking to be at an all-time high, this should be a prosperous summer for our business community,” said Paul Niedzwiecki, Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO. “The Cape is ready to welcome visitors from near and far with open arms and we hope everyone will support our small businesses, restaurants and Main Streets, many of which are still recovering from the pandemic. As we like to say, put your money where your heart is!” Check out the full video from the 2022 Cape Cod Quahog Day here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_ZSJQodPBk The video can also be downloaded from Dropbox here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0s1tqi3wkuspaa4/Full%20Ceremony%20v.3.mp4?dl=0 To learn more about the origin of the Cape’s trusty meteorological mollusk, watch "Behind the Mollusk: The Story of Johnny & Doug."
