Yarmouth Port, Mass. — CARE for the Cape & Islands is excited to announce four new grant recipients in the Cape Cod region: Yarmouth New Church, Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, Heritage Museums and Gardens, and the Cape Cod Toy Library. The 2022 CARE grant recipients attended the annual CARE Day held at Yarmouth New Church on May 11th to share details about their projects with attendees.This year’s CARE Day activities included a half day clean-up surrounding the site to prepare it for the season, painting the lower exhibit hall and preparing a new garden. Yarmouth New Church was built in 1870 on Yarmouth Port Common and now serves as a cultural center for public benefit and use. The Yarmouth New Church Preservation Foundation is a local nonprofit that has been working since 1998 to restore the building. Its CARE grant will fund a new sign that reflects the historical nature of the building and will also assist to develop a self-guided tour inside the building. Vicki Krukowski, the events coordinator for the Yarmouth New Church, stated, “ CARE’s work is really amazing and so essential. We want to thank CARE for its generosity.” On June 26th, the YNCPF will officially rename the building Thacher Hall to reflect its current secular nature. A special event will be held that day at 3 PM with live music, free food, and a dedication ceremony. Attendees will get a preview of the new sign that is being created and a self-guided tour. It consists of the Marconi/RCA-Wireless Museum dedicated to maritime communication history, a STEM Education Center, and the Antenna Field Walking Trail. Heritage Museums and Gardens is located on 100 acres of land on the banks of Shawme Pond in Sandwich. Its grounds boast magnificent gardens and walking trails. Its museums highlight Cape Cod’s cultural heritage, including the Wampanoag tribe, and history. CARE’s grant will help fund the installation of an outdoor water filling station. Cape Cod Toy Library, located in West Barnstable, lends over 1,5000 toys, games, and puzzles and 350 resource books to families all over Cape Cod. It is dedicated to supporting families of all cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds. The Cape Cod Toy Library is collaborating with Hyannis Public Library to create the Outdoor Play Oasis, a public outdoor play space. CARE’s grant will support the purchase and installation of a sign for the Play Oasis that welcomes visitors and shares the story and intentions of the space. Every year, CARE seeks to award grants ranging between $1,000-$2,000 to local nonprofits. The nonprofits must fit within one of five themes: Carbon Footprint Reduction, Environmental Stewardship, Food and Culture, Infrastructure, and Sense of Place. CARE specifically looks to fund projects whose impact will be long lasting, easily maintained, and will reach a significant number of people.
