By MACKENZIE RYAN, Falmouth Enterprise, 08.13.2021 Beginning September 1, businesses in Falmouth will be prohibited from selling noncarbonated, unflavored drinking water in single-use plastic bottles of less than one gallon. The prohibition stems from a bylaw that was passed during Fall Town Meeting last year as part of the Cape Plastic Bottle Ban initiative by Sustainable Practices. The bylaw includes penalties of up to $300 per day for violations. Exemptions take effect during a declaration of emergency affecting the availability or quality of drinking water to residents. The Falmouth Health Department has been charged with enforcement. Notice has been sent by the department to all local businesses that hold food permits. The town is also collaborating with the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce to get the word out to further ensure local businesses are aware of the new bylaw. The department of public works and the solid waste advisory committee collaborated to create an informational poster to inform businesses and members of the public about the upcoming ban. Their intent is to display the poster for the first time tomorrow during the Falmouth Walk, chairman Alan Robinson told the select board at its meeting on Monday, August 9.
