The Cahoon Museum of American Art will be open admission free from 10:00am – 4:00pm on May 24th as part of the Cape Cod Museum Trail’s Museum Mondays in May. Artist Scott Prior, whose exhibition of realist paintings is currently on view, will be present to greet visitors from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Registration for the event is requested at cahoonmuseum.org or by calling 508-428-7581. Drop-bys are welcome as gallery space allows. Scott Prior: Illuminations features 35 paintings and drawings spanning five decades of Prior’s artistic career. The exhibition features the artist’s work in genres of portraiture, still life, and landscape, including new work and scenes of Cape Cod. Prior’s paintings are characterized by fine detail, striking colors, and compellingly arranged compositions. His virtuoso artworks capture the beauty of everyday settings and moments, with an emphasis on the illuminating effects of light. Curated by Cahoon Museum Executive Director, Sarah Johnson, PhD, Scott Prior: Illuminations draws artworks from the permanent collections of the Cahoon Museum of American Art, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, New Britain Museum of Art, Fidelity Investments, Wellington Management, and 10 private collections. The colorful abstract paintings and sculptures of Brewster artists Jackie deRuyter and Kate Nelson are also on view at the Museum in the Shape Shifters exhibition, as well as the permanent display of artworks by 20th century Cape Cod folk art painters Ralph and Martha Cahoon.
