As part of the Cahoon Museum of American Art’s Friday wine and art series, author John Whitenight and artist Valerie Hegarty will present illustrated talks on July 26 and August 2 from 4:30pm – 6:00pm. The events are free with museum admission and free for members. On July 26, John Whitenight, author of Under Glass: A Victorian Obsession, will explore the fascinating world of Victorian shell grottos, shell houses and follies, and sailor valentines. He will discuss how he acquired his collection of over 175 glassed domes full of intricate, beautiful, whimsical, and inventive shell forms and creatures. His talk will be followed by a book signing. On August 2, the cutting-edge contemporary artist Valerie Hegarty will discuss her current body of work which features altered art history paintings and sculptures, followed by a tour of her artwork on view in the Secrets of the Sea exhibition. The artist holds a BFA from the Academy of Art College, an MA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her artwork has been featured in exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Brooklyn Museum, the Peabody and Essex Museum and galleries nationwide. The events will include wine and cheese receptions and the Museum’s current exhibitions, Exquisite Shells: The Art of Sailors Valentines and Valerie Hegarty: Secrets of the Sea, will be open for viewing.
