This hands-on course, designed for members of the fishing industry, covers welding fundamentals, safety, and practical skills for repairing scallop dredges and related gear.
Classroom Instruction (4-5 hours)
Safety, tooling, and equipment setup Identifying repairable vs. non-repairable damage Welding types: Oxy-Acetylene, MIG, TIG, etc. Metal preparation and basic welding techniques Hands-On Training (15-16 hours)
Safety demonstrations and equipment setup Heating steel, plasma cutting, and bracket fabrication Welding practice: flat stock, complex joints, and chain link repair Cleaning and storing equipment This course provides a basic understanding of welding for small repairs. It does not offer certification or cover advanced welding for equipment, engines, or heavy machinery.
This course includes Massachusetts Certified Hot Work Training.
This state-approved training will help develop the awareness and understanding you need to avoid accidents, injuries, and tragedies on worksites where hot work occurs. The Hot Work Training program is vital for anyone responsible for hot work, along with construction managers, safety directors, fire watch team members, and others industry wide.
Participants will be able to:
Identify relevant standards, regulations, and ordinances that are applicable to hot work Describe the various types of hot work Identify common fuel sources and ignition sources Describe the three-step approach to hot work safety Define and identify hot work and hot work hazards Describe hot work evaluation requirements Describe hot work safety team roles and responsibilities Describe hot work permit requirements Read and understand a hot work permit
The Hot Work Training module will take place at Cape Cod Community College's Hyannis Center (540 Main Street, Hyannis) on Friday, March 7th, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The Hands-on Welding module will be held on Wednesday, March 12th, Thursday, March 13th, and Friday, March 14th, from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM at Cape Cod Community College's Aviation Maintenance Technology facility, located at Plymouth Municipal Airport, 246 South Meadow Road, Plymouth.
