A group of university professors gather for a going away party as one of the group has unexpectedly resigned. As they try to get him to explain why he is doing this, a hypothetical situation is put forth. As they have done on other occasions, they proceed to discuss this hypothetical each from their own disciplines. Within a short time the topic ceases to be hypothetical. How each reacts and the consequences make up the rest of the play.

Still Life Stories features paintings from the Cahoon Museum’s permanent collection -lush florals and fruits by Edward Chalmers Leavitt, Marie LeValley, Levi Wells Prentice and others- surrounded by striking examples of the genre by contemporary local and regional artists.

This group exhibition celebrates the vitality of the still life tradition and its themes of beauty, bounty, and fleeting moments. Still Life Stories features paintings from the Cahoon Museum’s permanent collection -lush florals and fruits by Edward Chalmers Leavitt, Marie LeValley, Levi Wells Prentice and others- surrounded by striking examples of the genre by contemporary local and regional artists.
Still life paintings emphasize the artist’s skill in realistically rendering details, texture, and imbuing life-like qualities into a two-dimensional form. Still lifes often convey stories or deeper meaning, such as a reflection on impermanence. Still Life Stories includes many types of this genre such as floral bouquets, bountiful food and banquet images, animals, and symbolism.
Featured artists include Deborah Carter, Martha Cahoon, Ralph Cahoon, Nicole Duennebier, Valerie Hegarty, Marie LeValley, Edward Chalmers Leavitt, Brad Nelson, James Peale, Levi Wells Prentice, Larry Preston, Scott Prior, Shelley Reed, Severin Roesen, Curtis Speer, Eric Wert, and Abbie Lowella Zuill.

Enneking is often credited as “America’s first Impressionist”. His continued studies with the great impressionists of Europe influenced the development of his personal style, nurtured his love of nature, and reinforced his drive as a professional artist. He brought these teachings back with him to the United States where he painted in Boston and throughout greater region. Discover New England in a new light through Enneking’s bubbling trout brooks, thickly forested landscapes, solitary clam diggers, and his favorite subject: the brilliant New England twilight.
Celebrated during his time as “one of the world’s greatest landscape painters,” the Cahoon Museum is proud to present our collection of six John Enneking paintings alongside significant loans illustrating his many studies in Europe, his passion for nature conservation, and his advocacy for a truly American art style. The exhibition also reunites the artist with those whom he worked alongside and inspired while living and working in Boston, including the young Martha Cahoon.

Many artists take inspiration from nature and Martha Cahoon was no exception. The Cahoon Museum invites you to take an intimate look into the inspirations behind Martha’s widely appealing painted furniture and easel paintings.
Martha Cahoon loved nature. Over the course of her long career, she came to be admired by many for her sensitive pastoral landscapes and masterful painted furniture designs. But the roots of Martha’s artistic interest in nature run even deeper. She cultivated inspiration from gardening, spending time in nature, and studying the floral motifs of Swedish folk design. Martha Cahoon: A Garden of Inspiration highlights Martha’s repeated use of floral motifs through her expertly painted furniture and the easel paintings she became known for. The exhibition both celebrates and chronicles how Martha’s artistic voice blossomed over time.

Sailors Valentines: Maritime Art from the Heart celebrates the friendship and artistic collaboration of painter Ralph Cahoon and sailors valentine artist Bernard “Bernie” Woodman. Sailors valentines originated during the 19th century and feature exquisite shellwork housed in octagonal wooden boxes. Once popular gifts from sailors to their sweethearts back home, Ralph and Bernie further developed upon this artistic tradition with the inclusion of what they called “spyglass scenes”—paintings Ralph created as the centerpiece of Bernie’s intricate shell arrangements. Together between 1977 and 1982, Ralph and Bernie created dozens of whimsical, nautical fantasies in the sailors valentines tradition complete with mermaids, sailors, and hot air balloons. After Ralph passed away in 1982, Bernie commissioned Ralph’s wife and business partner, painter Martha Cahoon to carry on the tradition of painting spyglass scenes for his valentines. Ralph and Bernie’s sailors valentines tell a special story of friendship, artistic collaboration, and maritime history.

Artist Stephanie King’s work of mixed media and botanical illustrations containing real seaweed and botanical pressings. The works in this series offer both a realistic and whimsical assemblage of time and place. Stephanie takes a Victorian tradition of seaweed pressing into the future with modern shapes and ideas while pushing traditional boundaries and approaches. Stephanie focuses on creating natural abstractions through material exploration, drawing inspiration from the colors, patterns and textures found within the seascape. Each design strikes a balance between experimentation and refinement. Pressing seaweeds and botanicals offers Stephanie unlimited inspiration, peace, joy and hope. Working with a ‘wet medium’ has helped her surrender to the flow and learn to embrace the constant changing tides of life in all of its rhythmic cycles. Each piece of art is transformed into a piece of natural history; a unique fingerprint created from the specific seaside environment where its raw materials were collected. Stephanie is endlessly fascinated by the beauty and complexity of seaweed and botanicals in their natural environments. Along with being used as an art medium, seaweeds are important ecological resources, producing oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide in marine environments and play a major role in the maintenance of the earth’s ecosystem. In the early Victorian era, seaweed collecting was a popular past time among those women who had the means to travel to the English coast. Women gathered these ‘flowers of the sea’ and dried and pressed them in albums as memories of their seaside visits. Local botanicals were also admired and included into scrapbooks along with poetry, watercolors and anything that reminded them of their joyful experience. All of the seaweed in this exhibit was personally foraged and ethically sourced by the artist from locations along the Atlantic coast of Massachusetts, Maine and England, UK.

For the month of April, the Fire and Thunder 16 panel exhibit will be on display in the Adult Collections Room for the public to view during library hours. “The institution of slavery was a disease deeply embedded in the tissue of the new American republic. Though abolished in Massachusetts in the 1780s, on the national stage it survived, to be destroyed only after a long and bloody civil war. “Fire and Thunder” tells the story of how black soldiers in Massachusetts fought — in the press, on the streets, from the pulpit, the lecture podium, and the battlefield — in defense of human dignity and freedom.” This exhibit is free to the public and is on loan from the Commonwealth Museum.

In The Modern Cape, artists Josh Wald, Jiyoung Park, and Jeremy Wagner write a ‘love letter’ to Cape Cod. The exhibition marries the old and new, a virtual dance with history, a history being written in present time. The three artists will showcase their use of proprietary painting techniques as they demonstrate possible pathways to the evolution of the Cape Cod painting style. Their work is both a salute to the traditional style that historically comes from this area, as well as an embrace of the future. The modern take on this traditional style will be of interest to traditionalists as well as modern enthusiasts of younger generations.

The use of white is intentional in Never In Lieu of Flowers. Like a single note held in a minor key, it deepens the connection to the meaning of the work. While color, lights, and the use of resin, in the Deconstructed Botanicals, extend the language. Much of the joy of flowers is witnessing their life span. A tulip, for example, brings us hope as it pushes from the earth, continues to grow and extend its beauty after it is cut and even the faded fall of petals reminds of the passage of time. Ginnie Peterson constructs the Never in Lieu of Flowers and Deconstructed Botanicals sculptures from plaster, natural materials, stoneware, resin, steel and lights. For the white series, Peterson formulates mixes with Hydrocal (white gypsum cement) or plaster and liquid polymers to coat objects. She also makes many of her own containers from stoneware. In the later work Ginnie builds on steel armatures that she has welded for this series. She makes silicone molds from actual flowers and leaves then casts them with pigmented resin. She amasses materials then works intuitively, selecting from an inventory of materials, paying attention to shapes and relationships, conscious of how the cast of light affects the pieces or how the added light moves. Both Never in Lieu of Flowers and Deconstructed Botanicals are concerned with mortality, time, and potential, both lived and lost. The sculptures embrace the magnitude of the moment and reflect an awareness of our limited time on earth. The flowers, captured at their peak, grieve their own demise. They show us how much energy it takes to reach our potential, and how quickly we fade. As still lives, they evoke ghosts, statues. You cannot talk about life, they say, without talking about death. Where are you on the continuum? How do you measure?

The Civil War is an epic nine-episode series by the award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. Heralded as an unforgettable introduction to a four-year conflict fought in 10,000 places, the film vividly embraces the entire sweep of the war: the complex causes and lasting effects of America's greatest and most moving calamity, the battles and the homefronts, the generals and the private soldiers, the anguish of death in battle and the grief of families at home. The Falmouth Public Library will be screening this entire Civil War series over the course of a week. Join us on Friday, April 18th at 1pm in the Hermann room as we screen the final episodes of eight and nine, 1865 'War Is All Hell' and 'The Better Angels Of Our Nature.' Episode 8: War Is All Hell: "The episode begins with William Tecumseh Sherman's brilliant march to the sea, which brings the war to the heart of Georgia and the Carolinas and spells the end of the Confederacy. In March, following Lincoln's second inauguration, first Petersburg and then Richmond finally fall to Grant's army. Lee's tattered Army of Northern Virginia flees westward towards a tiny crossroads town called Appomattox Court House. There the dramatic and deeply moving surrender of Lee to Grant takes place. The episode ends in Washington where John Wilkes Booth begins to dream of vengeance for the South." Episode 9: The Better Angels Of Our Nature: "This extraordinary final episode of The Civil War begins in the bittersweet aftermath of Lee's surrender and then goes on to narrate the horrendous events of five days later when, on April 14, Lincoln is assassinated. After chronicling Lincoln's poignant funeral, the series recounts the final days of the war, the capture of John Wilkes Booth and the fates of the Civil War's major protagonists. The episode then considers the consequences and meaning of a war that transformed the country from a collection of states to the nation we are today." This documentary screening is free to the public and is supported by the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library. The Falmouth Public Library will be screening this entire Civil War series over the course of a week. Join us on Thursday, April 17th at 1pm in the Hermann room as we screen episodes six and seven, 1864 'Valley of the Shadow of Death' and 'Most Hallowed Ground.' Episode 6: Valley of the Shadow of Death: "Episode six begins with a biographical comparison of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee and then chronicles the extraordinary series of battles that pitted the two generals against each other from the wilderness to Petersburg in Virginia. In 30 days, the two armies lose more men than both sides have lost in three years of war. With Grant and Lee finally deadlocked at Petersburg, we visit the ghastly hospitals north and south and follow General Sherman's Atlanta campaign through the mountains of north Georgia. As the horrendous casualty lists increase, Lincoln's chances for re-election begin to dim, and with them the possibility of Union victory." Episode 7: Most Hallowed Ground: "The episode begins with the presidential election of 1864 that sets Abraham Lincoln against his old commanding general, George McClellan. The stakes are nothing less than the survival of the Union itself: with Grant and Sherman stalled at Petersburg and Atlanta, opinion in the North has turned strongly against the war. But 11th-hour victories at Mobile Bay, Atlanta, and the Shenandoah Valley tilt the election to Lincoln and the Confederacy's last hope for independence dies. In an ironic twist, poignantly typical of the Civil War, Lee's Arlington mansion is turned into a Union military hospital and the estate becomes Arlington National Cemetery, the Union's most hallowed ground." This documentary screening is free to the public and is supported by the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library. Join us on Tuesday, April 15th at 1pm in the Hermann room as we screen episodes two and three, 1862 'A Very Bloody Affair' and 'Forever Free.' Episode 2: A Very Bloody Affair: "1862 saw the birth of modern warfare and the transformation of Lincoln's war to preserve the Union into a war to emancipate the slaves. Episode Two begins with the political infighting that threatened to swamp Lincoln's administration and then follows Union General George McClellan's ill-fated campaign on the Virginia Peninsula, where his huge army meets a smaller but infinitely more resourceful Confederate force. During this episode we witness the battle of ironclad ships, partake of camp life, and watch slavery begin to crumble. We meet Ulysses S. Grant, whose exploits come to a bloody climax at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee. The episode ends with rumors of Europe's readiness to recognize the Confederacy." Episode 3: Forever Free: "This episode charts the dramatic events that led to Lincoln's decision to set the slaves free. Convinced by July 1862 that emancipation was now morally and militarily crucial to the future of the Union, Lincoln must wait for a victory to issue his proclamation. But as the year wears on there are no Union victories to be had, thanks to the brilliance of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. The episode comes to a climax in September 1862 with Lee's invasion of Maryland. On the banks of Antietam Creek, the bloodiest day of the war takes place, followed shortly by the brightest: the emancipation of the slaves." The Civil War is an epic nine-episode series by the award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. Join us on Wednesday, April 16th at 1pm in the Hermann room as we screen episodes four and five, 1863 'Simply Murder' and 'The Universe of Battle.' Episode 4: Simply Murder: "The nightmarish Union disaster at Fredericksburg comes to two climaxes that spring: at Chancellorsville in May, where Lee wins his most brilliant victory but loses Stonewall Jackson; and at Vicksburg, where Grant's attempts to take the city by siege are stopped. During the episode we learn of fierce Northern opposition to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, the miseries of regimental life and the increasing desperation of the Confederate homefront. As the episode ends, Lee decides to invade the North again to draw Grant's forces away from Vicksburg." Episode 5: The Universe of Battle: "This episode opens with a dramatic account of the turning point of war: the Battle of Gettysburg, the greatest ever fought in the Western Hemisphere. For three days 150,000 men will fight to the death in the Pennsylvania countryside, culminating in Pickett's legendary charge. This extended episode then goes on to chronicle the fall of Vicksburg, the New York draft riots, the first use of black troops, and the western battles at Chickamauga, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. The episode closes with the dedication of a new Union cemetery at Gettysburg in November, where Abraham Lincoln struggles to put into words what is happening to his people." This documentary screening is free to the public and is supported by the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library. Register to attend using the library's online event calendar or visit/call the adult service desk at 508-457-2555 x7.

Plan and develop patterns for each part of your design, spread thin layers of ink onto a flat surface, and overlay each part of your image in a different color onto paper. We will each combine a series of never seen before images to complete spring pictures to bring home. This workshop is for young artists that have experimented with printing before, and for kids exploring printing for the first time. We will be inspired by the current exhibit of prints and sculptures created by modern Cape Cod artists. Waquoit Bay & The Vínland Mystery
For over 175 years researchers have attempted to unravel the information in two Icelandic Sagas, – the Greenlander’s Saga and the Saga of Eric the Red, – with the goal of locating ‘Vínland’, an area on the North American Atlantic coast where grapes grew wild, winters were mild, and Native Americans already occupied the land. Without doubt the single most important development in the long search for Vinland was the discovery of a 11th century European settlement just outside the Newfoundland fishing village of L’Anse aux Meadows. Found in 1960 by Norwegian writer/adventurer Helge Ingstad, [1899-2001] and excavated by his wife, archeologist Anne Stein Ingstad [1918-1997] this site has however never been fully accepted as the answer to the Vinland mystery. Most all researchers continue to look for Vinland farther south. Southern New England, and in particular Massachusetts and Cape Cod has long been believed to be the area that best matches the picture of Vínland.

Old-growth forests, with their abundant deadwood, diverse canopy layers, and wide variation in tree ages, densities, and sizes, are strikingly different from our younger second-growth forests. These differences have profound implications for key forest functions, such as providing wildlife habitat and mitigating climate change. While we may never fully recreate true old-growth forests, we can use a combination of passive and active forest management to restore many of their defining characteristics. This presentation will explore the ecological distinctions between old-growth and second-growth forests and discuss practical strategies for restoring these characteristics while achieving broader forest conservation goals. Paul Catanzaro is a Professor in the Forest Ecology and Conservation program within the Department of Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He also serves as the State Extension Forester and Co-Director of the Family Forest Research Center, a collaboration between the USDA Forest Service and UMass Amherst. Through his work, Catanzaro integrates research and extension to support informed forest stewardship decisions by family forest owners, helping to enhance the sustainability and conservation of forest ecosystems.

Author and wildlife rehabber Terry Masear has an ambitious goal: to save every injured hummingbird in Los Angeles. But the path to survival is fraught with danger. This heart-expanding hit introduces audiences to Terry’s diminutive patients through breathtaking slow-motion photography and emotional storytelling. Over the course of director Sally Aitken’s moving documentary, we become deeply invested in baby hummingbirds like Cactus and Wasabi, celebrating their tiny victories and lamenting their tragedies. Through Terry’s eyes, each bird becomes memorable, mighty and heroic. Her compassion and empathy serves as a reminder that grace can be found in the smallest of acts and the tiniest of creatures.

When Abraham Lincoln sent out a call to arms Falmouth men bravely responded, reporting in large numbers to the Union army and navy. Many of these Veterans are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. Come hear the compelling stories of a select few as the Historic Oak Grove Cemetery presents Bravery and Honor: Falmouth Soldiers & Sailors of the Civil War - A Walking Tour. This approximately 75-minute event is free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine at the Oak Grove Cemetery located at 46 Jones Road in Falmouth. We will meet inside the chapel at the cemetery, which is handicap accessible. If the weather is inclement, we will stay inside the chapel, otherwise, plan on an easy stroll in the park-like setting. The tour will stop by personal graves and the renovated Grand Army of the Republic plot - one of the few examples in Massachusetts of this early type of memorial. Light refreshments will be served and registration is required. Oak Grove Cemetery is the final resting place for some 5,000 souls, many of local, regional and national renown - including Katharine Lee Bates who is the author of "America the Beautiful". Approximately 500 are Veterans, which is the greatest number of Veterans in any Cape cemetery aside from the National Cemetery in Bourne. Designed in the Mount Auburn Style, Oak Grove is rich in New England history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This non-denominational cemetery encompasses 22 acres. It is managed by the Oak Grove Cemetery Association of Falmouth and its Board of Directors is composed of active members whose priority is to preserve the character of Oak Grove Cemetery for future generations. Register to attend using the Falmouth Public Library's event calendar or calling the library's adult services department at 508-457-2555 x7.

How do you live when you know the end of your world is coming?
Join award-winning storyteller Jason Mellin in the second part of his Bonus Years duology as he heads to the drowned ghost towns of Quabbin in the Swift River Valley. He journeys back to visit those people who woke up one morning to learn that -in less than ten years time- everything they knew would be drowned under 400 billion gallons so people they’d never met from across the Commonwealth could have drinking water.
Mellin, a director, poet, and performer, pulls from his own experience with bipolar disorder to connect the remarkable story of the drowned towns of Quabbin to his and our own experiences of learning how to survive when your world is falling apart. The series is inspired by the precarity of life as we know it, and the great fortune we have to be able to experience such pain, joy, hope, and love while we are here.
Every performance of The Bonus Years stories are improvised live by Mellin, ensuring no two nights are ever the same.

In 2005 after graduating high school, Maggie Doyne embarked on a gap year, where she met Tope, a now grown Nepalese orphan, caring for orphaned children. United in purpose, Maggie and Tope pooled resources to establish a children’s home, women’s empowerment program, and school in Nepal. Years later, their relentless efforts led to being honored as the 2015 CNN HERO OF THE YEAR. But days after the award ceremony, Maggie, by then guardian to over fifty Nepalese children, faced the unthinkable, plunging the family into disbelief and despair. After a chance encounter amidst her grief, Maggie allows a filmmaker into her life to document herself, her family, and soon enough, their falling in love. “Between the Mountain and the Sky” explores resilience, love’s impact in loss, and a family’s enduring strength to find and rekindle hope in the darkest times.

In 2003, eight Rhode Islanders created a secret apartment inside the Providence Place Mall and lived in it for four years, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture, tapped into the mall’s electricity, and even constructed a wall, smuggling in over 2 tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for its inhabitants – a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification, a clubhouse to coordinate artistic charity, and finally, a 750 square foot “F you” to The Man.
