Cotuit Center for the Arts and Mark Cortale present Broadway@Cotuit Center for the Arts starring Tony Award-winner Sutton Foster, with Michael Rafter at the piano, on Wednesday, August 16, at 7:30 PM. An acclaimed actress, singer, and dancer on Broadway, television, and in the movies, Sutton Foster has won two Tony Awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role the first for her role as Millie Dillmount in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” in 2002, and the second in 2011 for her performance as Reno Sweeney in “Anything Goes.” The New York Daily News praised her “Thoroughly Modern Millie” performance, saying, “Newcomer Sutton Foster, has the pert look, the silver voice and the dazzling legwork to make an extraordinarily winning Millie.” The New York Times applauded her performance in “Anything Goes”: “Ms. Foster has the voice of a trumpet and a big, gleaming presence that floods the house. When she leads the show-stopping ‘Blow, Gabriel, Blow,’ you figure that if no horn-tooting archangel appears, it’s only because he’s afraid of the competition.” Among her numerous other Broadway credits are “Little Women,” “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Shrek the Musical,” “Violet,” “Sweet Charity,” and many more, for which she has earned Drama League, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Astaire, Lucille Lortel, and Broadway.com Audience Choice awards and nominations. Foster currently stars as Liza on the popular TV Land comedy-drama, “Younger.” Liza, a 40-ish suburban single mother reinvents herself as a 26-year-old in order to get a job at a publishing company. The fourth season is airing this summer. Previously, she starred in the critically acclaimed series, “Bunheads,” about a Las Vegas showgirl who marries and ends up teaching ballet with her mother-in-law in a sleepy coastal town. Foster was also recently seen in “The Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” in which she played Violet, who performs a musical show-within-the-show about the history of Stars Hollow. Since her television debut on “Star Search” in 1990, when she was 15 (she was a runner-up), Foster has appeared in a variety of other television shows, from “The Good Wife” to “The Match Game,” and has also appeared in several films. Michael Rafter is an arranger, musical director, conductor, and musician best known for his work on Broadway and his collaborations with Foster.
