The Commonwealth, through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, released a new Food Security Infrastructure Grant Program (FSIG). The FSIG program "[ensures] that individuals and families throughout the Commonwealth have access to food, with a special focus on food that is produced locally and [equitably]," and projects that have water conservation in mind." Projects can include but are not limited to: the purchase of equipment, conducting a food security study, updating information technology systems, upgrading food safety or storage equipment, buying vehicles for product distribution. The granters are looking "to ensure that farmers, fishermen, and other local food producers are better connected to a strong, resilient food system." Eligible applicants include farmers, food producers, commercial fishermen, aquaculture farmers, technical assistance providers, food pantries, colleges, nonprofits, food system organizations, small grocery stores, and more. Proposals may be submitted for up to $500,000. This is a reimbursement grant, so awardees will need to make purchases upfront, but they will be reimbursed later. Please note that applicants may independently seek a loan to cover the upfront costs, and the reimbursement payments can be used to repay their loan. Applications are due by 11:59am on Thursday, March 2nd. https://www.mass.gov/how-to/apply-for-the-specialty-crop-block-grant-program
