Are you ready to put 2020 in the ground? Woods Hole village is. How? The Library and the Community Association have been given 2,020 Chionodoxa or Glory of the Snow bulbs for planting around the village. The details: The Chionodoxa bulbs arrived and we need your help planting them! Starting this weekend the bulbs (in bags of 50 or 100) will be available for pick up at the Library. Let us know where you’re going to plant your bulbs and how many you need! We want to avoid digging up already planted areas and we don’t want to miss special spots. We have a number of planting spots identified. The goal is to plant them in places that the community will see and enjoy them. Thanks to Library Trustee and gardener, Marianne Fricke and videographers: Catherine Bumpus and Brian Switzer, we have a gem of a video explaining how to plant chionodoxa bulbs! Here’s the link: https://vimeo.com/475967373 You’ll need a shovel or trowel, a ruler and gloves are useful but optional. Call the Library at 508-548-8961 for bulbs and sign up for a particular spot. Or, email us and we’ll take care of your sign up: whpl_mail@clamsnet.org Just imagine how wonderful it will be to see spring arrive as a blue carpet throughout the village. And of course you’re welcome to plant some bulbs at your house! The Back Story: Hope and joy seem to be in short supply this fall. However, like many of her Woods Hole neighbors, one resident has found much of both—hope and joy, that is— right outside her door, in her garden. But how to diminish the impact of the coming winter? Anticipating spring flowers came to mind and a metaphorical seed was planted! She has decided to donate 2,020 spring-blooming Chionodoxa (Glory of the Snow) bulbs to the community, via the Woods Hole Public Library and the Woods Hole Community Association. She hopes that planting the bulbs this fall and seeing them bloom in the years to come will remind people of the importance of supporting their local organizations in any way that they can, especially this year, when so many of our usual community activities have been canceled or curtailed. The Woods Hole Public Library and the Woods Hole Community Association are filling their traditional roles very differently during the pandemic, but they are still important to the fabric of the community. Some of the most important services that these organizations provide are resources, gathering spots, and respite. This donation of spring bulbs covers their cost as a gift to the community. The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, hopes to inspire support from the community, especially during this difficult period, for these organizations, who face ongoing operational costs.
