This year’s winners of the annual NO GUFF spirit award were announced today. Each year, students and staff at Falmouth High School vote for peers and colleagues who they feel exemplifies the No Guff spirit all year long. In addition, the seventh annual NO GUFF Community Spirit Award winner was announced. Seniors chose Cate Brodie (a four-time winner) and Will Clymer as their top choices. Juniors voted Eli Haddad and Trevor Hodgson (a two-time winner) as their No Guff award recipients. Top sophomore vote-getters were William Gerlach and Milo Van Mooy. Freshmen selected Matt Shea and Caroline Sullivan as their award winners. Staff members voted colleagues Courtney Lima and Henry St. Julien as their top choices for this year’s No Guff recipients. In addition, Mary Gans awarded the Principal’s Award to FHS Senior Marvell Nicholson (2-time winner). 2020 also marks the seventh year that a NO GUFF Community Spirit Award has been presented. Many nominations were received for a community member who “consistently displays a positive attitude, avoids talking negatively about others, practices random acts of kindness, and offers kind words or lend a hand to others.” This year, the selection committee chose Susan Negri as the recipient of the Community Spirit Award. Sue is “truly an amazing human who makes this world a better place,” wrote one. “Ms. Negri volunteers as a tutor for Falmouth students,” wrote another. “She is incredibly encouraging, positive, and just a wonderful person to be around.” Another pointed out her friendly and positive attitude, saying “I have never heard a bad word spoken from her mouth. She greets everyone with a smile, ready to be of assistance.” NO GUFF was first observed in 2001 as a day-long celebration. This tradition, unique to Falmouth, is a time to celebrate respect and positivity. No Guff Week encourages celebrations of respect, community, and unity. In the schools, it is a time when students and staff work together to create a positive atmosphere in the school and avoid name-calling and put-downs. At their January 27th meeting, Falmouth Selectmen issued a proclamation that No Guff Week in Falmouth be celebrated February 3 – 7. No Guff founder and retired FHS adjustment counselor Greg Gilbert, along with FHS Senior Grant Leachman, shared a brief history of No Guff Week and what it has meant to students growing up with the tradition. The theme for 2020 is “Count on Me.” Local businesses Cavossa Disposal Corporation and Cape Cod Aggregates donated funds for this year’s NO GUFF Week t-shirts. A special NO GUFF Week video was produced by Morse Pond teachers Ann Goulart and Aimee Maseda. The video debuted on Monday and is available on YouTube linked from the Falmouth Public Schools website, www.falmouth.k12.ma.us
