Brewster, MA, May 21, 2019– “It’s a fallacy to think that until there’s a cure for Alzheimer’s there’s nothing that can be done – there is so much more we can all do,” says Dr. Molly Perdue, co-founder and Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod (AFSC). On Wednesday, June 26, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center (Barnstable High School), 744 West Main St, Hyannis, the AFSC and nationally renowned dementia specialist Teepa Snow will explain and demonstrate the many things people and communities can do to make life better for people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia disease. “Offering this conference free of charge reduces financial barriers and brings Cape Cod one step closer to having a well-educated, dementia-trained informal and formal work force,” Perdue says. With seating capacity of over 1,000, this conference will provide nearly a quarter million dollars of free education to the Cape Cod community. Topics to be covered include: • Building a Dementia Friendly Community • Creating a Safe and Friendly Environment: How it Affects Abilities and Behaviors • How to Communicate with Someone Who Has Dementia • Coping with Challenging Behaviors in Dementia Care A Positive Approach is open to lay people as well as professionals, including family caregivers, those who work for agencies and facilities, and anyone who serves the public. Continuing Education credits for first responders, mental health professionals, Social Workers, RN’s, and Activities Directors are available, also free of charge. Lunch and a noon-time reading and book signing by Cape Cod author Greg O’Brien are included in the day-long event. Says Melanie Braverman, AFSC Cultural Director, “Teepa Snow is the rock star of the Alzheimer’s world. She’s smart, she’s funny, but most importantly for caregivers, her training is really useful.” Jane Greene, primary caregiver for her husband Bill, says, “I left [last year’s] conference with many tools to help my husband and myself. This year I’m bringing several family members back with me.” Registration is requested as seats are filling fast. Call 508-896-5170 or go to www.alzheimerscapecod.org.
