Gene and “Doug” teaming up for beach weather prediction FALMOUTH, MA (May 20, 2019) — Boston 25 Morning News anchor Gene Lavanchy will kick off summer 2019 as emcee of the 11th Annual Cape Cod Quahog Day. Lavanchy will host the festivities at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 21 at the oceanfront Sea Crest Beach Hotel in North Falmouth. Lavanchy will work alongside Cape Cod’s infamous “Doug”—the region’s beloved official Quahog since 2009—who will deliver his highly anticipated annual summer forecast and predict how many beach days we can look forward to in 2019! Quahog Day, presented by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and sponsored this year by Cape Air, is a true rite of passage into summer for Cape Cod residents and visitors alike. Upon his arrival, Doug will be escorted to his prognostication perch by his Quahog Security Detail, a team of black-suited men and women armed with clamming rakes. During his “Prognostication Ceremony,” Doug will whisper his prediction into the ear of his human sidekick, Captain Johnny Quahog of the Quahog Republic, who will then relay the sunny forecast to Lavanchy to share with the attending crowd. As this year’s Quahog Day emcee, Lavanchy says he is honored to share the hard-shelled mollusk Doug’s official prediction of how many beach days lie ahead for the summer season! Born and raised in Massachusetts, Lavanchy was a vital part of the Boston 25 Morning News launch in 2003. The “all local, all morning long” blend of news, traffic and weather started as an alternative to national morning shows and has grown into a popular newscast for busy morning people. Lavanchy takes great pride in preparing New Englanders for their day. Anchoring most of a six-hour local morning newscast allows him to alert viewers to breaking news and provide context and perspective on the big stories of the day. Lavanchy has also field-anchored Boston 25 Morning News’ popular Zip Trips for the past 14 seasons. He has broadcast live and has interviewed thousands of newsmakers, celebrities and everyday citizens who do extraordinary things from more than 230 cities and towns across the state. "We are looking forward to welcoming Gene Lavanchy for our 11th Annual Quahog Day,” said Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross. "I predict Gene and Doug will hit it off right away because they both have a naturally curious disposition, and also love meeting new people and being involved in community events.” “After one of the rainiest Aprils on record,” continued Northcross, “people are ready for some sunny news from Doug, who has turned into one shell of a local celebrity.” Quahog Day, which is free to the public and includes plenty of laughs and fun photo opportunities, gets underway at 2 p.m. After Doug the Quahog's prognostication, patrons are encouraged to stay to enjoy small bites and music outside the Sea Crest hotel overlooking Old Silver Beach. Limited edition Quahog Day tees, provided by Cape Cod Textile, will be available for purchase at the event. For more information, please visit QuahogDay.com.
