FALMOUTH, MA, July 15, 2017 — Falmouth Economic Development & Industrial Corporation (EDIC) announced today the Grand Re-Opening of the renovated Falmouth Station will take place on Thursday, July 27 at 12:30pm at 59 Depot Avenue, Falmouth, MA. State and local officials will attend and the community is invited to join the celebration. The Station – initially named the Falmouth Railroad Station – was placed in service in 1872 when the Old Colony Railroad inaugurated service on the Woods Hole Branch. In 1912 the original Falmouth Railroad Station was sold to the Swift family who moved the wood depot across the tracks. In its place the New Haven Railroad built a replacement brick depot which stands to this day. Rail service ended in 1989. Since then the former Falmouth Railroad Station has been renamed as the Falmouth Station and is used as a bus depot by the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority and Peter Pan Bus Lines. Most of the rail line that once carried trains to the station has been converted into a 10.7-mile bike path known as the Shining Sea Bikeway which extends from Woods Hole to North Falmouth. The Falmouth Station is located next to the bikeway near the 3.5 mile marker. In 2015 Falmouth EDIC acquired a 99-year lease from Massachusetts Department of Transportation in conjunction with a grant to renovate the Station. The EDIC’s goal was to restore the appearance of the 1912 building and repurpose it as the Town’s Transit Center. Future improvements will include a café and historic rail cars. “Our local representatives, local business leaders, MassDOT and others have been an important part of the vision for this project,” says Michael Galasso, Chairman of the Falmouth EDIC. “We’d like to thank them for their support, and invite the community to join in celebrating this wonderfully restored building. We hope it will serve as a welcoming place for residents and visitors for years to come.” About Falmouth Economic Development & Industrial Corporation (EDIC) Falmouth EDIC is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization established in 1981 by vote of Town Meeting to develop the Tech Park on Thomas Landers Road, with a mission to increase business and industrial opportunities; expand the opportunities to own, manage and operate commercial and industrial enterprises; provide funding assistance; and increase job opportunities in Falmouth.
