Yarmouth Port, MA – Six grant recipients have been selected for 2017 from a variety of project applications that fit within at least one of five funding themes including Sense of Place, Environmental Stewardship, Carbon Footprint Reduction, Infrastructure for Community Livability, Food and Culture. A complete description of the criteria may be found on CARE’s website, careforthecapeandislands.org. Selected grants ranged from $500-$2,000 each for a total of $9,000 and will be awarded to Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance, Cape Cool, Center for Coastal Studies, Coonamessett Farm Foundation, Maria Mitchell Association and Provincetown Recycling and Renewable Energy Committee. This is the first year that a grant will be awarded to a Nantucket nonprofit. According to George Donnelly, Director of Development and Communication "The Maria Mitchell Association is proud to be selected as the first Nantucket grant recipient from CARE. Nantucket, like so many other popular travel destinations, struggles to provide an authentic, yet sustainable, experience for the tens of thousands of people who visit the island. With the CARE grant we will bring the concept of sustainability through the collection of beach trash and turning it into works of art. Turning trash into treasure is just one way of helping to keep tourism in line with sustainability." Grants will be awarded May10, as part of the Annual CARE for the Cape and Islands Day to be held at Nobska Light. The event will be held 8:30-1PM where volunteers are invited to spend the morning to help with beautification and preservation measures on the grounds of this historic lighthouse. Advance registration is required. About CARE for the Cape Day “It is our goal to inspire residents and the business community to become stewards of the home we love, Cape Cod and the Islands”, explained CARE’s Director, Jill Talladay. At the event all attendees will spend the morning to assist with beautification and preservation measures, learn about the Nobska Light from Friends of Nobska Light and be able to take a tour of the lighthouse keeper’s home and lighthouse. The event is a great way to network with volunteers from the business community and meet the recipients of CARE grants. CARE for the Cape and Islands was founded in 2012 “To Create A Responsible Environment” by connecting visitors, residents and businesses with educational and stewardship opportunities that support local organizations and projects committed to the long-term sustainability of the region. Through contributions of “time, talent and treasure” and mindful actions, this beautiful place will be preserved for future generations.
