Yarmouth Port, MA - Grant applications for 2017 projects are now being accepted. Proposals must meet specific criteria and fit within at least one of five funding themes including Sense of Place, Environmental Stewardship, Carbon Footprint Reduction, Infrastructure for Community Livability, Food and Culture. A complete description of the criteria may be found on CARE’s website, careforthecapeandislands.org. Applications will be accepted through January 8, 2017 and selected projects will be announced in early 2017. Ten grants were selected in 2016 to fund projects from Falmouth to Provincetown and ranged from $500-$2,000. The Falmouth Farmers Market and Compost With Me teamed up to provide fun educational activities and food waste collection at the market throughout the season. CARE was a lead funder of the Hyannis Sea Captains’ Row Mural project located on the side of Bradford’s Hardware Store. The mural was an extension of a 2015 grant to develop and map the sea captains trail and its historical significance. Another project was to provide signage for the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History’s new Pollinator Path that helps to educate visitors regarding the importance of pollinators and their connection to our food supply. CARE also held its 2016 CARE for that Cape Day at the museum in May where a group of volunteers worked together planting native plants along the pollinator path and concluded with presentation of the 2016 grants. On November 1, CARE presented its 2016 Stewardship Award to Cape Cod Beer, in recognition of their commitment to caring for Cape Cod and adopting day to day practices that fit CARE’s mission to preserve and enhance our natural environment, heritage and culture. CARE’s Director, Jill Talladay, explained that Cape Cod Beer was selected from nominations submitted by the pubic and chosen because they exemplify a commitment to sustainability and community. CARE for the Cape and Islands was founded in 2012 “To Create A Responsible Environment” by connecting visitors, residents and businesses with educational and stewardship opportunities that support local organizations and projects committed to the long-term sustainability of the region. Through contributions of “time, talent and treasure” and mindful actions, this beautiful place will be preserved for future generations.
