(Hyannis – December 12, 2016) Women on Cape Cod now have access to the latest breast health diagnostic technology close to home. Tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, is now available at Cuda Women’s Health Center in Hyannis and at Seifer Women’s Health Center in Falmouth. This technology provides an enhanced view of the breast, allowing physicians to evaluate breast tissue layer by layer, making the details, like possible tumors, more visible. Tomosynthesis mammography is similar to traditional two-dimensional (2D) mammography, using X-rays and compression to capture breast tissue images. Unlike 2D technology, the 3D machine actually moves around the compressed breast. Similar in concept to a CT scan, it takes many more pictures at different angles, providing a greater depth of view. The images are much clearer and show subtle differences that might have been previously hidden from detection. With its increased sensitivity, 3D mammography has greater accuracy in determining the size, shape and location of abnormalities. “Studies have demonstrated that 3D mammography increases the detection rate of cancer, while reducing the number of false positives,” said Salvatore Viscomi, MD, chairman of the Department of Radiology at Cape Cod Healthcare. “It picks up the cancers we want to pick up, at a much earlier time, which is our goal.” The Hologic 3D mammography system at the Cuda Center is approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration, and is recommended for women of all ages and breast densities. “With the addition of 3D mammography to our comprehensive breast health services, we are fulfilling our promise to the community to bring the latest and best technology, physicians and care to Cape Cod,” said Michael K. Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare. “Our breast care teams at Cuda Women’s Health Center in Hyannis and Seifer Women’s Health and Imaging Center in Falmouth are passionate about what they do, and women and men can feel comfortable that they will receive exceptional and compassionate care, close to family and friends.” Tomosynthesis mammography is covered by most insurance plans. Please consult your individual plan for more information. The decision about which technology to use and when is very specific to the patient’s breast health history, genetic risk, or diagnosis, Dr. Viscomi said.
