(Falmouth, October 27, 2016) Falmouth Hospital has renamed its conference rooms in memory of the late Dr. E. Landon Burwell, one of the founding physicians of the hospital. Located in the Faxon wing of the hospital, the conference room will be formally named the E. Langdon Burwell Education and Conference Center at a dedication and reception at the hospital on Monday, November 7, 2016, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Dr. Burwell, who was the first Chief of Internal Medicine at Falmouth Hospital, provided the leadership, intelligence and vision that shaped the creation and development of the hospital for nearly 40 years. In 1955, Dr. Burwell was one “three young men of vision” who advocated for the idea of a Falmouth Hospital. “I was intrigued from the start with the idea of uniting in Falmouth the brilliant minds and latest equipment of a big city hospital with the pleasant surroundings and the intimacy of a smaller community hospital,” he said at the hospital’s opening in 1963. Dr. Burwell, who as a highly respected physician and much beloved and admired by his patients, colleagues and staff, established Falmouth Medical Associates and practiced internal medicine until his retirement in 1990. He died in 1993. “It is well known that Falmouth Hospital would not be the institution it is without Dr. Burwell’s tenacity and passion for excellence in community medicine,” said Michael Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare. “We are extremely pleased to preserve and honor his memory here at the hospital for years to come.” Always ahead of his time, Dr. Burwell believed strongly in the benefits of health education, and he encouraged colleagues to empower patients with information for healthy lifestyles and illness prevention. He also believed that physicians and nurses should set an example through their own health choices and would encourage staff to quit smoking and use the stairs instead of the elevator. The refurbished and refreshed space has new lighting, carpeting, wall coverings, tables and chairs, and updated AV equipment. This renovation was made possible in part by a generous donation to Falmouth Hospital in Dr. Burwell’s memory. The Burwell Education and Conference Center is used daily for medical, nursing, employee, patient and community learning opportunities. In so doing, it embodies all that Dr. Burwell believed was essential for the growth, vitality and integrity of a strong hospital and healthy community. Please join members of the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation, administration and medical staff and others for the dedication ceremony on November 7. Refreshments will be served and the program will begin at 5:55 p.m. To RSVP, please email rsvp@capecodhealth.org or call Patty Peal at 508-457-3807.
