(Falmouth – June 24, 2016) Five years ago, the Clark Cancer Center opened at Falmouth Hospital to offer close-to-home radiation oncology services to the people of the Upper Cape. The Center continues to provide the latest cancer treatment to our community. To mark this milestone, the Clark Cancer Center will host a community open house on Wednesday, June 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. Visitors can tour the center, meet with staff and enjoy light refreshments. Former patients and family members are encouraged to attend. The hospital is located at 100 Ter Heun Drive in Falmouth. The 10,000-square-foot Clark Cancer Center was made possible through a transformative $10 million donation from the late James Clark and his wife, Ruth, of Falmouth. The Clarks’ gift was a direct reflection of their memory of long drives to Boston for radiation treatments each of them had to undergo at different times in their lives, and their wish to help others. Since opening its doors in 2011, the Clark Cancer Center has provided nearly 30,000 treatments. Once a referral is made, the patient is seen within two days, unless there is a specific request by the patient or referring physician. Also instrumental in making Clark Cancer Center a reality was a $1 million donation from the Falmouth Hospital Auxiliary, which was the largest gift the organization had made up until then. “It is fitting that we recognize and celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Clark Cancer Center, because it has raised the level of care available in the Falmouth and Upper Cape community,” said Michael K. Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare. “Through the incredible generosity of Jim and Ruth Clark, we were able to bring critical radiation oncology services to this region. Their compassion for others whose lives have been touched by cancer is truly inspiring, and has made this community a healthier place in which to live. We were honored to fulfill the Clarks’ vision of having the latest, best and most convenient cancer care close to home, and look forward to continuing to bring state-of-the-art, accessible cancer care to Cape Cod for a long time to come.” Clark Cancer Center, which partners with Shields Health Care Group, is staffed by board-certified radiation oncologists Molly Sullivan, MD; Basia McAnaw, MD; Jeffrey Martin, MD; and Daniel Canaday, MD. They are part of the Cape Cod Healthcare Regional Cancer Network, which coordinates cancer care across the CCHC continuum, including at Davenport-Mugar Cancer Center at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod. Clark offers state-of-the-art equipment, such as the Varian IX Linear Accelerator, the Topex Superficial Unit and the GE Simulator. Clark is capable of multiple modalities of radiation therapy, as well as 3D, 4D, Rapid Arc, IMRT, Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, KV Superficial, Electron Therapy and Prostate Seed Implantation. Among the other improvements CCHC has made to the Upper Cape over the last five years are: • Seifer Women’s Health and Imaging Center – offering the latest in women’s health and general imaging services at Falmouth Hospital • The Medical Office Building – renovations to the office building at Falmouth Hospital • Falmouth Hospital Outpatient Surgical Center – renovations to the facility in North Falmouth • A new patient care unit at Falmouth Hospital, and a hospital-wide renovation of rooms and a transformation to all private rooms. • Stoneman Outpatient Center - the Center on Route 130 in Sandwich was renovated and expanded and now provides enhanced primary care, specialty care, imaging services, Cape Cod Healthcare Laboratory Services and an Urgent Care Center. • Falmouth Urgent Care Center – a new facility, offering the CCHC urgent care model featuring care by emergency room-trained physicians, opened on Route 28 in Falmouth in May 2016.
