This is a company no one needs to deal with. He was asked to diagnose a leak in my gas fireplace flue. After first charging $150.00 for a "review" of the fireplaces in my home, he concludes that the storm collar is causing the leak into my firebox. He charges me $250.00 for this and, after several weeks, I note that the water is continuing to leak. I call him out again and he decides that, now, the cap should be replaced. I called again after hearing the water dripping and he now decides that he had advised me at the first meeting that the cap needed replacement. This is a blatant untruth and the invoices don't support that he so advised me of this. Any reputable business would have so noted this on any invoice for work performed. When I so advised him of this, his only reply was to hang up the phone. If he had, at any time, advised me initially of the need to replace the cap, I would have done so and not even bothered with the collar as it wasn't the cause as I have, unfortunately, came to discover. This company doesn't have the expertise to properly diagnose a problem even though the owner touts his 38 years of experience. Stay away!

I have used Falmouth Chimney Sweep for many years and can not say enough about the them. They are very professional and polite, from scheduling an appointment to the workers. Joe Bento, the owner, is very concerned about customer satisfaction and goes above and beyond if there is a problem, which you rarely find from a company anymore. I would highly recommend them. Would have gone fine if they were allowed to do the work.
Description of Work: An excellent choice. As we have a pellet stove and they are not allowed by proprietary companies to have access to schematics they are no longer able to do cleanings. How does this happen? Anyhow they always did a great job. Great guys!

Thank you [Member Name Removed] for the review. Again we are sorry we cannot continue to service your pellet stove. We thought long and hard about this and felt that if we cannot give you the best possible service we cannot accept the job. We certainly appreciate your understanding on this matter and your kind words.

They arrived on time and finished in a reasonable amount of time. Cleaned out ash trap in basement and vacuumed dust while they were working to prevent any dust from escaping into the house. Thoroughly reviewed the condition of the chimneys with me. All told, I was very pleased with the job.

Professional and friendly service from initial call through completion of job. Always a pleasure to connect with a 'real person' when I phone the office to schedule the work! Also appreciated receiving a call the day before service as a reminder of the date and timeframe. The service guys arrived right on time and were efficient, thorough, and very careful not to leave a trace of soot around the fireplace area. This was the second time I've used Falmouth Chimney Sweep and will definitely use them again.

They were fine. I shopped around with other companies but they all pretty much came within the same ballpark. They came in, did the job, cleaned up, and left. There was absolutely nothing bad. The 2 guys that were here were very courteous and I say that they did a professional job. I absolutely had no problems with them. To me the price was expensive but everything else was just fine.

Joe visited the house on a number of occasions to advise on what needed to be done. He took numerous pictures, including from the roof, to show us what was going on up there and why we needed to take action. He spoke with me on the phone at least three or four times and answered all my questions. Dale, who I think is the office manager, was also very helpful and they are both very pleasant to work with. The crew from the subcontracted masonry company showed up when promised, just a few days after my deposit was sent in, and worked a full day to complete the work around the chimney, making a change to the flashing material once they got in there and saw what was needed. The work area was extremely neat and clean when I arrived the next morning. Then the Falmouth Chimney crew returned and performed the work on the tops of the chimneys, plugging the unused chimney with stone, and putting a new cap on the furnace chimney.
Description of Work: The chimney on our 100+ year old house was leaking. Mortar was missing and we wanted to cap the chimney with stone so that we stopped losing heat out of the chimney. Also, wind had blown off the caps that had been on the chimneys and the sea gulls were sitting up there and doing what sea gulls do.... Falmouth Chimney ground out and tuckpointed the mortar joints and sealed the flashing area then plugged the fireplace flue with stone. They also resurfaced the crown and installed a cap on the separate heating system chimney.

Two Falmouth Chimney Sweep employees arrived on time. They were very polite and were very neat in doing the job. As far as I know they did a good job on the sweep. My problem with Falmouth Chimney Sweep occurred afterwards. After completing the sweep the lead man said other work needed to be done and that he would give the information to the boss who would write up a proposal and send it to me. That proposal totaled $5947 which did not include sealing or a permit fee of $250. Considering the fee for sealing could amount to between $350 and $500 (according to other estimates I received), the total for the Falmouth proposal would have been at least $6547. I was only told that their proposal did not include sealing after I called back to ask. In addition the proposal included three areas where additional charges could occur but did not specify how much those charges could be. I definitely did not like the sound of that. Because that proposal was awfully high, I called my oil company and asked them for a recommendation. Sandwich Chimney Sweep came out to look at the chimney and said they could only do two parts of the job that needed to be done and recommended a mason who could do the whole job. The mason came out and then prepared an itemized quote. Initially his proposal also did not include sealing. His final proposal including sealing and permit fee was $5600 ($947 less than Falmouth?s proposal). I was told his proposal was complete! He will be doing the job in May. After the job is complete I will write a review of his work.
Description of Work: They swept the two-flue chimney of my Cape Cod style house (chimney on an end wall). One flue is used by my wood stove and the other flue is used by my furnace.

Response from FALMOUTH CHIMNEY SWEEP
As the Office Manger of Falmouth Chimney Sweep I would like to respond to (member name removed) remarks concerning our service. Prior to our latest visit in 2013 recommendations for maintenance were made in 1997, and if they had been followed, would have negated the currently needed rebuild to this chimney. Our proposal absolutely did not include 3 areas of unspecified charges as stated by (member name removed). Proposals are broken down into options for our customers and they can choose what they want to have completed. We do this because expense is an issue for many customers and we understand that some work needs to be done in stages due to finances. Any unusual issues pertinent to the job are noted in regards to any additional charges that may apply if there are unforeseen problems encountered once the masonry is open. It is impossible to price every single thing we might find inside enclosed masonry until we see it. More often than not, we don’t encounter any problems. The proposal did include our standard disclaimer that all prices are based on a chimney that is properly constructed to existing codes at time of construction and additional work due to improper construction may result in additional charges. This is a rare occurrence. There was a note on this particular proposal regarding the re-usability of the existing flue tiles. Included when relevant is an option for us to obtain the permit for an additional charge; however we encourage the owner to obtain this permit themselves at considerable savings with the information that we will supply all paperwork and info needed for the customer to do just that. We did not include a water repellent option on this proposal. This job was a rebuild and our mason uses quality materials. When (member name removed) inquired about water repellent I left her a phone message stating I would get price right out to her. She replied in an email that she felt we attempted to mislead her. I don’t know why she feels we attempted to mislead her as each option on the proposal is very specific as to what it includes and her water repellent inquiry was addressed right away. The return e-mail explained why the water repellent was not included in the original proposal and some information about water repellent and when it is appropriate to apply it. She was then encouraged as in the phone message, to call the office if she needed further conversation regarding any aspect of the job. The owner would be more than happy to walk her through what needed to be done and why. To date there has been no response from (member name removed) to any attempt on our part to deal with her concerns except to post this review that appears to be based more on price than service. Falmouth Chimney Sweep prides itself in ensuring every customer has a thorough understanding of their chimney system, and what improvements, if any need to be made. However, we can only do this if the customer is open to dialog. We use a highly skilled masonry service with many years in the business for large masonry repairs. They get top dollar for their work but it is done correctly and they are reliable professionals, which is our reason for using them. While I can understand (member name removed) may not have been happy with the price for such an extensive job, we made every attempt to provide her with our customary excellent level of service.

As mentioned above. I didn't use their services.
Description of Work: Received quote only. Last year was charged $125.00 for 58 feet of gutter cleaning. This year requested quote for cleaning 30 feet of gutter and placing per-dabbed gutter guards in place which I already had. The quote was $285.00 which I really felt was very high. Also was quoted $250-285 for chimney sweep.

Response from FALMOUTH CHIMNEY SWEEP
In response to this posting: Falmouth Chimney Sweep has reviewed the call log for December 5th 2012 and can confirm we had one inquiry regarding gutters. We quoted a price of $285.00 to clean 30 feet of gutters and to install (if possible) gutter guards that the customer had on hand, sight unseen. Our current price to clean gutters is $2.25 a linear foot for the first 100 feet of gutters. This has been our pricing for the past several years. In looking into our records we can see we cleaned 56 feet of this customer’s gutters at the same pricing in 2011. Thirty feet of gutters is charged at $67.50 and the rest of the $285 quoted was the charge to install the gutter covers, again, sight unseen. This price covers our costs of doing business: gas and vehicle maintenance, drive time to Centerville from Falmouth, labor for 2 men, liability and workmen’s comp insurance, licensing and certification fees for our company and the time to do the job with unfamiliar materials. If the gutter guard installation turned out to be less work than expected we would discount the price in the field. Again, we agreed to install another company's product sight unseen, with no knowledge of the quality of the guards. We cannot offer a discount without seeing the materials first. As far as sweep pricing is concerned, our current sweep prices, which have been in place since September are $235 - $250 for fireplaces, heating system flues, and free standing wood stoves. The price to sweep wood stoves installed into fireplaces ranges from $235 - $285 depending on the type of installation. We do not have any service range at $250 - $285. Certainly we encourage all potential customers to shop around for expertise, quality of service, and price. While we are sorry that we weren’t able to meet this customer’s expectation regarding price, we hope he was able to find a service to meet his budget.

Joe Bento and his company is very professional, courteous and compares well to the other local company I interviewed for this repair. With these paramaters in mind, I choose this company because I thought that Joe's inspection and original assessment of the issue was more thorough than the other service. Prices were about equal, however, his quote was broken into segments. This allowed options to select which repair was most necessary and plan for other considerations as time and budget permit. Repairs were made when promised and if weather interfered with scheduled date the office called ahead to permit re-scheduling. Very pleased with service.
Description of Work: I had a severe leak into the house from my fireplace under random extreme rain-wind conditions. The leak was hard to predict and seemed to stop completely over the summer. Necessary to determine where the leak was coming from. Both services agreed it was at the top of the chimney crown. At the same time Joe detailed some precautionary measures that could be options. It was decided to see how repair works out and assess again if there are more issues. He also noted that the chimney cap installed above one of the two flues on the chimney was set in such a way that rains were essentially directed into the other uncovered flue and needed to be redirected. He came up with 2 alternatives and costs. This additional repair option was selected at the same time.

The employees at Falmouth Chimney Sweep are true professionals. They arrived on time and got to work quickly. When they finished they made sure to leave the work area clean. I highly recommend this company and will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: The ventilation system for my dryer was cleaned thoroughly starting at the appliance which is on the second floor, up to the attic, and finally through my roof. Some hardware was needed to secure the vent which added $25 to the basic vent cleaning fee of $150. I thought the cost was justified and reasonable.
